FAMI The Importance of Confidence

Having addressed the science behind the FAMI technique and the long history of exploration and discovery that led Dr. Roger Amar to formulate his theories on the power and possible uses of regenerative adult stem cells, we turn our attention to the most important individual in this entire process – the patient.

Faced with the array of alternatives currently available to those in search of cosmetic procedures, whatever their motives may be, it is common to wonder if FAMI is the right choice for them or if they are right choice for FAMI.

This is a decision that involves all parties involved in the process – both the patient and surgeon. On the clinical side, generally this decision is made only after a series of consultations and interviews made under the supervision of Dr. Roger Amar, ensuring the physical and mental health of the patient before proceeding. Just as important, the decision to welcome new patients must come after a full and complete analysis of their own motivations and well being to ensure they fully comprehend what they are about to encounter.

While this may sound like a somewhat daunting experience, the process is one that surgeon and patient will work through together, each helping the other to understand one another’s doubts and needs and finally what is demanded to guarantee the best possible results. In other words, the confidence between patient and surgeon is a two ways street of equal importance. Dr. Amar will instruct and advise each patient until he is convinced that all the graft process is well understood.

In the following section, we will address the most common characteristics of an ideal candidate for FAMI, including those physical and emotional attributes that most aid in the acceptance of adult stem cell grafts and ultimately, the healing process.

With patients arriving from an array of social, physical and geographic backgrounds, these characteristics are far from uniform in all those who undergo the FAMI procedure. They are not unique to age or sex, only to those candidates who are confident and equipped enough to join the FAMI family.

Chapter One: The Importance of Confidence
As we have mentioned before, there is no single, ideal candidate for the FAMI technique. Rather, an ideal candidate is one who has come to the confident conclusion, alongside Dr. Amar, that FAMI is the best possible solution available to overcome what personal obstacles they face. This candidate also feels confident that he or she will be able to invest the time and effort to the process, working with Dr. Amar and his staff towards a result far beyond their expectations.

These patients come from a wide range of candidates, sharing little in the way of finances or culture. However, all have arrived to achieve one of two tasks – to preserve or to restore.

According to Dr. Amar, while these patients arrive from all corners of the geographic and socio-economic world, they may be roughly characterized as belonging to two very broad groups, one younger, in search of preservation and an older group in quest for restoration and/or rejuvenation.

The first group includes those individuals who want to be preserved from the marked signs of aging. They tend to be younger in age and are often new to the world of cosmetic surgery. Adverse to the unpredictability and side effects so commonly associated with traditional cosmetic procedures and synthetic fillers they are most familiar with, they are in search of a healthy, organic alternative. They would like to preserve the youthful look and feel of their face, but without the invasive surgery of contemporary procedures – they come to FAMI (Fat Autograft Muscle Injection) to achieve surgery without a scalpel.

While many are still young, usually between 25 and 35, they may be witnessing the first trends of aging and have set out to slow or alter the process. They come only after tireless research that has led them past synthetic or unpredictable methods, such as Botox or face lifts, and to the benefits of FAMI. Spurred by the pressures of time, they are eager to find a preventative solution and would prefer that solution come in a safer, organic package.

This process may have led them through months of online and first-hand research and analysis, through seeking professional and personal advice and even across oceans, but ultimately, they arrive confident that the procedure they have chosen is the only choice to support efforts to preserve their look.

No less confident in their decision, the second of these groups come to FAMI as a part of their quest for cosmetic rejuvenation, whether as first-time or veteran patients. Fig45.

More advanced in their years, yet just as curious and unwavering in their research and analysis, these candidates come in search of a way to rediscover the look and feel of the face they once saw in the mirror. While this group shares a similarity in age, they tend to differ in levels of experience.

Many see the idea of cosmetic procedures as uncharted territory, having gone through life unwilling to explore the idea of synthetic fillers and their uncertain consequences.

Meanwhile, the others included in this latter group are those arriving with varying levels of experience with cosmetic procedures, but have often found themselves unhappy with the results or the need to repeat procedures to ensure longevity. Fig 46

While they too would like to rediscover a fuller, more youthful look, their motivations commonly arise from a desire to reverse the results of earlier procedures in favour of a more natural and organic approach with longer-term results. Having heard about the possible benefits of adult stem cells, they are eager to explore what they can do for them.

Having witness first-hand the consequences and instability of so many traditional methods, they arrive at their FAMI conclusion eager to reverse not just years, but the damage they have seen done.

While these groups hardly cover all the characteristics of a successful FAMI candidate, one trait that does is that of confidence. Perhaps more important than any other medical or emotional trait, a patient’s confidence in the success of FAMI and its ability to do what no other treatment can is imperative to their success and overall well-being.

Whether this confidence comes through meticulous research or simple intuition, Dr. Roger Amar has repeatedly stated that it is a crucial and compulsory component in the evolution of any successful patient. Only then, when a prospective patient is sure, can they move on to questions of adequate medical and emotional well being.
